Beaten Up in Beijing!

Recently I flew into Beijing, to meet my girlfriend who was out in China on a business trip.
After a long flight from London, and a taxi ride from hell in the smoggy heat of the rush hour traffic,
I arrived at my hotel, sweaty, tired and feeling less than refreshed.
As a surprise my girlfriend Lucy had organised a back massage for the pair of us in our hotel room and I was expecting a calm, soothing affair, which would let me unwind, relax and doze off for a while.
The ladies that turned up at our hotel room door were tiny, about 4ft nothing, speaking no English and carrying no equipment or massage couches. As a result, I didn’t expect much.
But how wrong was I? I was literally attacked by my masseuse!
Thumbs, fists, elbows, bodyweight... You name it, she cracked, pulled, slapped, beat and hit me, pummelling my muscles and ironing out my tight spots! Boy did it hurt!
What was meant to be 45 minutes of wind down turned into three quarters of an hour of painful torture that left me bruised and wiped out.
‘Was my girlfriend mad at me?!’ I started to wonder. ‘Had I done something to upset her?’
These ladies took great pleasure in hearing us swear into our pillows as they stood and knelt on us, cracking our spines with all sorts of strange noises and clicks. They were laughing away as we felt every manipulation.
As soon as it seemed that they had finished, another bout of heavy handed massage ensued, leaving us to question whether this whole ‘treatment’ had been a big mistake.
The funny thing was that despite all the teeth clenching discomfort, we actually felt amazing the next day.
It was quite literally like walking on air. It seemed that all the pain hadn’t been in vain after all!
Now, I don’t profess to enjoying torture, and while exercise may seem like an uncomfortable necessity sometimes, you can make it painless by knowing what to do and getting it done quickly.
Working out in your hotel room effectively can burn hundreds of calories, simply using your own bodyweight to create a total body workout.
While I didn’t feel like working out after that massage (let’s be honest, I don’t think I needed to!), I made sure I did my hotel room workout the next day, while I felt on top of the world.
Believe me; the right travel workout can leave you feeling great for hours afterwards, not to mention a more effective fat burner – just without getting beaten up!
