Have you ever lost your laptop away on business? I thought I had recently, and I can tell you, the stress was unbelievable!
I was on a flight back from New York which was overbooked. As a frequent flyer I had no problem getting my seat, but the overhead hand luggage bins were fit to burst. Someone must have done some serious shopping in the Big Apple!
The air stewardess was up and down the aisles, trying to deal with the overflowing bins and fit everything in before take off. I was shattered, so I settled into my seat and fell asleep.
When we landed in London, I went to pull my laptop bag from the locker and it wasn't there! I immediately panicked, thinking that someone had run off with my laptop and all it's vitally important work documents! I felt a cold sweat and nauseous.
Luckily, the stewardess saw the blood drain from my face and came to my rescue, telling me that she had moved it an aisle or two down, to make way for an over-sized bag in my overhead bin.
The relief was huge, but it did teach me a lesson. ALWAYS back up your work and keep a copy on a USB memory stick, close to your person!
That way, if your laptop should go walkabout, you still have all of your major work safe and sound. If I had lost my laptop that time, I would have seen a lot of hard work disappear down the drain.
Please pack a memory stick on your next trip and back up your work daily.
The security of safe work will give you peace of mind, and save you hours of rewriting!
